Milagris School – Sawantwadi

History of Milagris

Milagris High School was founded in the year 1934 to cater to the needs of the poor children residing in Sindhudurg District. It is a co-educational English, Semi-English & Marathi Medium School which aims at providing Academic, Physical, Moral, Social & Spiritual formation of the students so as to make them good citizens of the society and the nation.

The St. Philomena English High School was inaugurated on 14th June 1934 by His Highness Khem Sawant Bhonsle, Rajesaheb of Sawantwadi. His Highness urged, the Diocese of Poona to take over the school under Poona Diocesan Educational Society.

It was placed under the management of the Holy Cross Sisters of Amravati, as, the then government insisted on the medium of teaching in the primary section be switched over to Marathi, the Holy Cross Sisters decided to leave the school as they were not acquainted with Marathi language. They left Sawantwadi after working for 16 years, laying a strong academic foundation.

St. Philomena English High School was taken up by the Diocesan Priests of Poona and Marathi Primary section was given to the Fatima Sisters. St. Philomena was derecognised by the Catholic Church. Therefore it was in 1961 that the name of the school changed from St. Philomena High School to Milagris High School associated with Milagris Church, Sawantwadi.

As per the need the school was reverted to English Medium in 1961 with both Marathi and English mediums. From 1957 to 1972 the Diocesan priests were the Principals of the English Medium School. From 1973 to 1986 the Fatima Sisters were the Principals of the school. From 1987 onwards the Poona Diocese appointed its own Principals for Milagris High School and the Marathi Primary Section was given to the Fatima Sisters.

Milagris School is a Christian Minority School which aims at giving an all round development in education. The school has been growing in strength during these years. Today the school boasts of having 3000, students from Nursery to SSC catering to different sections of the society.
